SAN DIEGO (November 4, 2024) – Faculty at California Western School of Law (CWSL) are continuing to prolifically produce groundbreaking work and present it across the country and around the globe.  

Here are some highlights of the faculty’s activities from the month of October:

Chief Justice Roger Traynor Professor of Law, William Aceves

Professor William Aceves co-hosted “First Monday: An Overview of the Supreme Court’s 2024-2025 Term” with additional CWSL Constitutional Law Faculty. In this hybrid event, moderated by Dean Sean M. Scott, the Constitutional Law Faculty previewed several upcoming U.S. Supreme Court cases for the 2024-2025 term. 

William Aceves

Associate Professor of Law, Emily Behzadi Cárdenas

Professor Emily Behzadi Cárdenas presented, “Cultural Heritage Protection as a National Security Interest,” at the Syracuse University Institute for Security Policy and Law on October 24, 2024.

Professor of Law, James Cooper

Professor James Cooper and co-author Kashyap Kompella’s book, “A Short and Happy Guide to AI for Lawyers” was published by West Academic Publishing in October 2024. Their second book, “A Short and Happy Guide to AI Governance and Regulation” will follow in February 2025—also published by West Academic Publishing.  

Professor Cooper was a coordinator and panelist for the 3rd International Meeting on Corporate Integrity and Global Legal Regulation in Brazil on October 2, 2024, hosted by Faculdades de Campinas (FACAMP). He presented “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights:  Are They Mutually Exclusive?”

Professor Cooper presented on AI for Lawyers at the 3rd Annual Meeting on Corporate Compliance in Brazil on October 3, 2024, hosted by FACAMP.

Professor Cooper and his co-author, Kashyap Kompella, published an Op-Ed entitled, “El imperativo de la inteligencia artificial para los sistemas jurídicos de América Latina (The imperative of artificial intelligence for Latin American legal systems)”, on October 17, 2024.  

Professor Cooper and co-author Kashyap Kompella delivered the Keynote, “AI and the Law”, for Innova Day 2024 at Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso in Chile on October 23, 2024. You can watch the speech on YouTube at timestamp 15:13.

Professor Cooper moderated the panel, “Impact Investment & Fundraising - A 360 view, Digital Davos” on the sidelines of the COP16 UN Conference on Biodiversity in Colombia on October 28, 2024.

Glenn Smith

Professor of Law, Kristen van de Biezenbos

Professor Kristen van de Biezenbos was an invited speaker for the LSU Law Faculty Speaker Series on October 24, 2024. She presented her work in progress, “The Immoral Energy Economy."

Professor van de Biezenbos was quoted in the Globe & Mail’s recent article comparing the use of fossil fuels vs renewables in Texas and Alberta on October 26, 2024.

Professor van de Biezenbos was a panelist for the University of Victoria Institute for Integrated Energy Systems & Energy Modeling Hub Symposium in Victoria, BC Canada on October 31, 2024.
