California Western Faculty Highlights – November
SAN DIEGO (December 2, 2024) – Faculty at California Western School of Law (CWSL) are continuing to prolifically produce groundbreaking work and present it across the country and around the globe.
Here are some highlights of the faculty’s activities from the month of November:
President and Dean Sean M. Scott
Dean Sean Scott has been announced as a speaker on two panels for the 2025 Association
of American Law Schools (AALS) Conference in San Francisco, California.
Dean Scott was featured in the San Diego Business Journal’s article, “Dean Scott Champions Diversity as Cal Western School of Law Turns 100”.
Vice Dean Hannah Brenner Johnson
Vice Dean Hannah Brenner Johnson has been announced as the next dean of Southern Illinois University’s (SIU) Simmons Law School.
Professor William Aceves was elected to serve as a Vice President for the American Branch of the International Law Association.
Professor Emily Behzadi Cárdenas has been announced as a speaker for the 2025 Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Conference in San Francisco, California.
Professor of Law, James Cooper
Professor James Cooper and co-author Kashyap Kompella’s book, “A Short and Happy Guide
to AI for Lawyers” was published by West Academic Publishing in November 2024. Their
second book, “A Short and Happy Guide to AI Governance and Regulation” will follow
in February 2025—also published by West Academic Publishing.
Professor Cooper presented a seminar on “LegalTech and Artificial Intelligence” at the Inter-American Bar Association Council Meeting in Santa Cruz, Bolivia on November 14, 2024.
Professor James Cooper and co-author Kashyap Kompella’s book, “A Short and Happy Guide to AI for Lawyers”, ranked number one on “Amazon Hot New Releases” for Science and Technology Law.

Professor Shawn Fields has been announced as a speaker for the 2025 Association of
American Law Schools (AALS) Conference in San Francisco, California.

Legal Writing Professor, Joshua Jones
Professor Joshua Jones participated in the Education Law Association 70th Annual Conference
in Orlando, Florida.
Professor Jones’ article, Implementing ABA Standard 303(B)(3): Positive Legal Education Through A Community Of Inquiry (published in Vermont Law Review) was quoted in TaxProf Blog.
Professor Jones has been announced as a speaker for the 2025 Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Conference in San Francisco, California.
Professor Amy Kimpel has been announced as a speaker for the 2025 Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Conference in San Francisco, California. She will speak on a panel entitled, “How to Account for Trauma and Emotions in Legal Teaching”.
Professor Ken Klein’s 2023 article, The Case for Pausing Any Immediate Embrace of the Social Inflation Argument for Legal System Reforms, (published in the Journal of Insurance Regulation) was quoted in USA Today’s “What to do if you can’t get insurance in Florida”.
Professor Joanna Sax spoke on the panel, “Strategic Visioning for the Academy of Food Law and Policy,” for the Third Annual Conference on Food Law and Policy at Loyola University Chicago School of Law on November 15, 2024.
Professor Erin Sheley has been announced as a speaker for the 2025 Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Conference in San Francisco, California. She will speak on a panel co-hosted by the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Sections on the Confrontation Clause since Crawford v. Washington.
