CWSL 1Ls Compete in 2026 Conte Cup Opening Statement Competition

The 2026 Conte Cup Opening Statement Competition commenced on February 9, featuring
over 90 first-year students competing in this annual showcase of advocacy. Over three
days of rigorous competition, the field narrowed down to 35 semifinalists, and ultimately,
13 exceptional finalists took the stage for the final round on February 12.
The final round was judged by four practicing trial attorneys, including the founding
partners of HHJ Trial Attorneys, who generously sponsored cash prizes for the top
three students. The judges praised the students’ dedication, preparation, courtroom
presence, and persuasive storytelling, noting the exceptional level of advocacy on
display. The judges determined that all 13 finalists should be awarded Distinguished
Advocate awards. The results are:
1st Place: Sebastian Avila
2nd Place: Cynthia Sewah
3rd Place: Carlos Valdovinos
Finalists: Tony Episcopo, Alekzander Leppert, Richard Etienne, John Gonzalez, Frank
Padilla, Beatriz Parilla, Janine Ezomo, Nat Tayahua, Brandi Blakemore, and Zoe Miranda
The success of this year’s Conte Cup reflects a collective community effort. The Competitive
Advocacy Program extends its appreciation to the local attorneys and alumni who volunteered
their time to judge the preliminary and semifinal rounds. Their thoughtful feedback
and engagement were invaluable to our students’ growth and success. The Program also
expresses its gratitude to HHJ Trial Attorneys for graciously sponsoring this year’s
Conte Cup, and for their continued support of CWSL and our students.
From the packed Moot Courtroom to the exceptional performances at the podium, the
2026 Conte Cup exemplified the commitment, preparation, and talent that define the
CWSL community.
