California Western School of Law Convocation 2026

Gathered for their first time at the James M. Carter and Judith N. Keep U.S. Courthouse,
California Western’s 1L class of nearly 250 students took the Oath of Professionalism,
administered by the Honorable Anthony J. Battaglia ’74, Senior United States District
Judge.

Dean and President Miriam H. Baer welcomed the students and encouraged them to forge
bonds with their new community.
“In many cases, the relationships you forge this week and over the next semester will
form the building blocks of a personal network that supports and empowers you for
the rest of your life,” Baer said.

Alumni Association President Taylor Morrison ’17, Deputy District Attorney, San Diego
County District Attorney’s Office, also greeted the students and challenged them to
focus on their individual development.
“There will be moments over the next three years where you have to choose between
what is comfortable and what will help you grow,” Morrison said. “And I challenge
you to choose what will help you grow.”

Judge Battaglia told the students to keep their oath of professionalism top of mind.
“I urge you to reflect on this oath that you take often,” Battaglia said. “Use it
as a moral compass to deal with day-to-day issues in your lives and in your studies
and ultimately in your practice as lawyers."

Congratulations, future lawyers, and welcome to law school!
