
California Western Faculty Highlights – June 2025

SAN DIEGO -- Faculty at California Western School of Law (CWSL) continue to produce groundbreaking work and present it across the country and around the globe.
Here are some highlights of the faculty’s activities from the month of June:
Chief Justice Roger Traynor Professor of Law William Aceves
Professor William Aceves recently authored and served as counsel in the filing of two amicus briefs. One brief was filed with the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of members of Congress and in support of victims of human rights abuses in China (Doe v. Cisco Systems, Inc.). A second brief was filed with the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of Colombian legal scholars and in support of victims of human rights abuses in Colombia (In re Chiquita Brands International Inc. Litigation). Both cases involve the complicity of U.S. corporations in human rights abuses committed overseas.

Dean Steven R. Smith Professor of Law Susan Bisom-Rapp
On June 14, Professor Susan Bisom-Rapp was elected a Fellow of The College of Labor and Employment Lawyers (CLEL) at a meeting of CLEL's Board of Governors in Washington, DC. CLEL is a learned society "honoring the leading lawyers nationwide in the practice of Labor and Employment Law." Founded in 1995, CLEL is comprised of over 1000 Workplace Law experts drawn from practice and academia. An induction ceremony for new Fellows will be held at the CLEL Gala on November 15 in Denver, CO at the Denver Art Museum.
On June 16, Professor Bisom-Rapp was quoted in a Bloomberg Law Daily Labor Report article. The article, Punching In: The Labor Department Gets an Education (Program), covered information about an informal OSHA hearing seeking stakeholder input on the agency's proposed national heat safety standard. Professor Bisom-Rapp said, "That's incredibly important, you want to hear from small businesses, you want to hear from unions. The more we give room for different voices, the better."

Professor of Law Emeritus Robert (Bob) Bohrer
Professor Bob Bohrer presented “We Need to Put a Human in a Computer, STAT!!” at Biolawlapalooza 7.0, hosted by Stanford Law School.
Professor Bohrer presented “We Need to Put a Human in a Computer, STAT!!” at the American Society for Law, Medicine, and Ethics Health Law Professors Conference, hosted by Boston University.
Professor Bohrer co-authored “AlphaFold 3, AI, Antibody Patents, the Future of Broad Pharmaceutical Patent Claims, and Drug Development” with CWSL alumnus Brendan Bargmann ‘23, published in AIPLA Quarterly Journal.
Professor Bohrer co-authored “Drug Versioning and Legal Accountability” with CWSL alumna Eva Parente ‘24, forthcoming in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

On June 15, Professor James Cooper had the honor of presenting at the 9th Asian International Economic Law Network (AIELN) Conference, hosted by Senshu University in Tokyo. The talk was on “comparative approaches to AI regulation.”

Legal Writing Professor Joshua Aaron Jones
Professor Joshua Jones is an editor and contributor to Legal Argumentation: Reasoning & Writing About the Law, published in The Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI) eLangdell.
Professor Jones co-authored “Sexual Conversion Therapy In The Third World: An Islamic Perspective,” published in Cornell University’s Undergraduate International Law Review.

Professor Amy Kimpel was quoted in the San Diego Union Tribune’s “A San Diego Juror Received an Apparent Spam Text. Could It Upend a Hostage-Taking Murder Verdict?”

Professor of Law Aaron Schwabach
Professor Aaron Schwabach presented "California greening: differences in California and federal approaches to climate change law," at the Constitutional Instruments for Climate Protection in the Light of International Obligations conference organized by the Constitutional Court of Hungary, with Pásmány Péter Catholic University and the National Council for Sustainable Development in Budapest, Hungary on June 6, 2025.
Professor Schwabach presented "The Kosovo Conflict and the Law of War," at University of Pristina, Kosovo, June 4, 2025.

Associate Dean for Research and Professor of Law Erin Sheley
Professor Sheley presented her book chapter, “Criminality,” at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Law, Culture, and Humanities at Georgetown University Law Center.

Associate Clinical Professor and Executive Director of Community Law Project Clinic Dana Sisitsky
Professor Dana Sisitsky was quoted by the San Diego Unified School District in their report, “Protecting Our Students Campaign Results.” Professor Sisitsky said, “California Western School of Law's Community Law Project (CLP) operates legal clinics and engages in community education throughout San Diego County, providing individuals with critical information about their legal rights. Providing services on site at San Diego area schools allows CLP to assist the community in environments that are supportive, and where families are comfortable. We are proud to partner with the San Diego Unified School District in their efforts to protect students and families.”
